The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Response
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the requirement for a more defined vision.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire content from the president's communication:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. After a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years creating and managing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming him next week. We are all eager to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader

Title Details and Concept
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and tests that change every round. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or supported systems, but players can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
