The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
